Ester-C Benefits, Side Effects, and Research

AKA: , Calcium Ascorbate, Ester-C

Ester-C Overview

What ester-c does :
One of the most dramatic and immediate benefits of buffered vitamin C is its ease of digestion and assimilation. A number of human and animal studies have explored the absorption and physiological effects of Ester-C mineral ascorbates in comparison to normal vitamin C.

What ester-c is made of :

Ester-C is a unique, patented calcium bound ascorbate mineral complex. Vitamin C is a basic antioxidant and is essential in the synthesis of collagen and the health of connective tissue, gums, teeth and bones. However, the most common form of vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is very acidic and can be bothersome to people with sensitive stomachs. Since the vitamin C in Ester-C is bound with calcium, higher doses may be consumed without the worry of upset stomach.

Ester-C is a buffered form of vitamin C with metabolites. The presence of these metabolites is very important in the absorption of vitamin C. The body changes vitamin C into numerous metabolites naturally, that may have physiological actions different from those of vitamin C itself. In fact, these metabolites may actually influence how vitamin C itself is transported and utilized.

Detailed Information on Ester-C:

In one animal trial, Dr. Anthony Verlangieri and his colleague, Marilyn Bush, fed groups of rats equal amounts of either ascorbic acid or Ester-C. They tested the blood and urine levels of vitamin C in the animals for four hours after oral administration. The animals fed the Ester-C had higher blood levels of vitamin C, suggesting an improved rate of absorption in comparison to normal vitamin C. Vitamin C was not detected in the urine of the Ester-C group until long after it was discovered in the urine of the group said the normal vitamin C. This delay and excretion suggests better tissue utilization of the Ester-C before it spilled over into the urine. Verlangieri stated that this improved absorption and tissue uptake appeared to be due to the vitamin C metabolite threonic acid, which is present in Ester-C.
