MSM Benefits, Side Effects, and Research

AKA: , Methylsulfonylmethane, MSM

MSM Overview

What msm does :
MSM is an organic form of sulfur found in all living organisms. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body (10th most abundant in the known universe) and is found in every cell. Sulfur provides the chemical links needed to create collagen, which forms and holds the molecular structure of connective tissue. It forms the disulfide bonds in connective tissue that are links in the glycosaminoglycan chains that form cartilage.

Where msm is found :
MSM is naturally found in protein rich foods such as eggs, fish, and lean meat. However, today's overprocessed American diet may provide lower ammounts of sulfer than the body requires. In this situation, supplementation is advisable.

What msm is made of :
MSM is a bio-available sulfer, necessary for all parts of the body.

How much msm to take :
Since sulfer is needed by all body tissues, it may be taken in dosages up to two grams (2,000 mg) daily.

Common mispellings of msm :
MSN, methylsulfolmethenane

Detailed Information on MSM:

Glycosaminoglycans are large, spongy, water-holding molecules composed of long chains of amino sugars, like chondroitin sulfate. They form a gel-like matrix of the ground substance of our tissues, especially connective tissues, such as tendons, cartilage, skin, and bones. These gels are the 'glue' that holds our bodies together. Glycoaminoglycans, like MSM, are the substance that fills most of the space between our cells; providing mechanical support to tissues while still allowing the diffusion of nutrients, metabolites, and hormones between the blood and tissue cells. The gel-like matrix, together with its glycoaminoglycans and structural and adhesive components (like collagen and elastin), forms the architectural framework for our bodies. Dietary sulfer, like MSM, is related to the production of glycoaminoglycans. This is especially important during growth and development, and when connective tissue metabolism becomes active for support of healthy tissues. Sulfer is also needed for amino acid metabolism and hormone synthesis, and MSM is a key factor in the body's natural defenses. It is a component of important sulfer amino acids, including methionine, cysteine, and glutathione. MSM is an essential nutrient, not only for connective tissue, but also for other tissues in the human body. Unfortunately, modern food processing methods greatly reduce natural MSM levels and foods, so very little is obtained from the diet these days, unless your diet is rich in unprocessed milk, vegetables and grains. Sulfur is abundant in chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, to constituents that support healthy joint function.
