Lutein is a fat-soluble carotenoid that gives certain vegetables their yellow pigment. Research has shown that lutein protects the macular region of the eye and supports healthy visual function. Lutein makes up most of the pigment in the retina of the human eye. Damaging rays from the sun, however, as well as other environmental factors, can deplete Lutein levels. Therefore, taking supplemental Lutein is important if you do not consume at least 3-6 servings of phytonutrient-rich vegetables every day.
