Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American males. The occurrence of prostate related illness in the West is epidemic, killing between forty and fifty thousand annually. African American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rate in the world. Prostate cancer is diagnosed every 2 3/4 minutes, approximately 190,000 new cases each year. Prostate cancer incidence rates increased 192 percent between 1973 and 1992. For the fortunate cancer patients who survived this disease, there are often side effects of treatment that diminish the quality of life.
Why is this the case? What can be done? Intense scientific research has recently led to exciting new discoveries on this important medical front. Both treatment and prevention may be within sight as study after study reveals the chemistries at play in the prostate disease process.
Thankfully, in the field of natural prostate health, science is advancing rapidly. We now know that inflammatory mediators (eiscosanoids) play a mighty role in both prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). There is little doubt that virtually every man in America today will face either prostate cancer or BPH at some point in his life. In fact, most of us have some prostate cancer cells by the time we are in our late twenties. The key is that they are kept in check - particuarly when our inflammatory levels, as mediated at low-normal vaules.
That is why men need to inhibit the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) inflammatory cascade. According to a University of Virgina Study, when the 5-LO enzyme becomes elevated and comes into contact with excessive arachindonic acid in the body, it creates 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE), which is the fuel for the prostate cancer cells. Inhibit production of 5-HETE and we can literally starve the tumor!
